Acts 14:5-18, Ps. 113, John 14:21-26

"Judas (not Iscariot) said to him, ‘Lord, how is it that you will manifest yourself to us, and not to the world?' Jesus answered him, ‘If a man loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him'" (John 14:22-23).

This is the great Christian mystery, namely that Christ manifests himself to us, while the world sees him no more. It is because we live in him, and he lives in us (John 14:20). And the mystery is even greater in that Christ is also in the Father, and the Father in him (John 10:38). Christ is our intermediary to unite us to God. Christ is in the Father, and the Father in him; and Christ is also in us, and we in him (John 14:20). Therefore through our union with Christ, especially in the Eucharist, we are thereby united to the Father, to the Trinity. Christ is the source of our new life in God. We draw from his fullness (John 1:16). He is the source-invisible to the world-of this new life. "Yet a little while, and the world will see me no more, but you will see me; because I live, you will live also" (John 14:19). "As the living Father sent me; and I live because of the Father, so he who eats me will live because of me" (John 6:57). To live because of Christ should be understood in the sense of living through him and by means of him, as he lives through, because of, and by means of the Father. We live through, because of, and by means of Christ especially in the Eucharist. We draw our new life in God by eating Christ's body and drinking his blood, and in this way we live through him, because of him, and by means of him. Indeed, "God sent his only Son into the world, so that we might live through him" (1 John 4:9).

Moreover, both the Son and the Father will make their home within us. They will manifest themselves to us by living within us. This is the special indwelling of God in those who love him and keep his word. This is something special, over and above God's general indwelling in all things, sustaining them in existence. This special indwelling is only for those who love Christ and obey his commandments. "If a man loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him" (John 14:23). Dwelling in us, he will manifest himself to us, but not to the world, for he will not dwell in the world in this way.

Christ is God with us, Emmanuel. In him God manifests himself to us and is with us, and even more, he is within us in a special new way. Both Christ and his Father dwell in the hearts of those who love and obey him (John 14:23). The more we love and obey him, the more profoundly will he dwell within us.

Those who renounce the world and its pleasures for the love of God in order not to divide the love of their heart in any way will know him better. This is why the priestly, clerical, religious, and celibate life is the highest state of life, for in this state of life one can love Christ without division of heart among the pleasures of this world (On this point click on this link: http://www.stevenscherrer.com/admin/upload/122.pdf ). They can sacrifice all for the sake of Christ: wife, family, and all the pleasures of this world. They can live literally and radically for Christ alone with all the love of their heart, without any division. They have renounced all for him, including marriage and their own family to live for him alone. Therefore Christ normally reveals himself more profoundly to them.
